Most knee injuries severely impact an individual’s quality of life. The knee is a unique joint. It carries your body’s weight at the same time as it provides flexibility and mobility. The knee is made up of the femur, tibia and patella bones, which are held together by muscles, ligaments and tendons. This intricate construction means that your knees are at risk from sudden movements and blows, as well as from damage caused by repeated wear and tear.

What Can Cause a Knee Injury?

Some knee injuries can be caused by a trauma, such as an accident or fall, or even by a sudden increase in your daily activities, such as jogging an extra kilometer or two. Other injuries develop over time and can be caused by structural problems in your knees or elsewhere in your body, incorrect athletic training methods or by worn-out and ill-suited equipment for your body size and type.

Ligament sprains, tendon strains, cartilage tears, and patello-femoral syndrome are just some causes of knee pain. A ligament or tendon strain or sprain is a tear or stretching of the ligaments or tendons that hold the knee together. Meanwhile, cartilage forms a pad between the bones of the knee to distribute your weight evenly and to provide a cushion. Cartilage, however, can tear. The softening and deterioration of cartilage under the kneecap is known as patello-femoral syndrome. These conditions are caused by overstretching, pressure while twisting and turning during weight- bearing exercise, inflammation, or excessive friction in the joint itself.
