ICBC Claims & Coverage
Overview of ICBC Claims & Coverage
Motion Medicine Program
The term Motion Medicine Program generally refers to a holistic approach to health and wellness that focuses on using movement as a central tool for improving physical and mental well-being. While the term might not refer to a specific, universally recognized program, the idea can incorporate various medical, therapeutic, and fitness-based approaches that emphasize the importance of movement for healing, recovery, and optimal performance.
Here are some related concepts and contents that are often associated with Motion Medicine programs:

Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation
Movement-based rehabilitation: Physical therapists often design programs to help individuals recover from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions by using targeted movement exercises to restore function, reduce pain, and improve mobility.
Postural correction: Improving posture through guided exercises is often a key part of such programs to reduce strain on the body and promote better movement patterns.

Movement Medicine as Holistic Health
Mind-Body Connection: Movement is viewed not just as a physical activity but also as a tool for enhancing mental and emotional well-being. This includes practices like yoga, tai chi, or dance therapy that focus on breathing, mindfulness, and alignment.
Reducing Stress and Anxiety: Physical activity is well-documented in its ability to release endorphins, improve mood, and reduce stress. Programs might emphasize rhythmic, repetitive movement to calm the nervous system.

Exercise Physiology
Functional Movement: Some Motion Medicine programs emphasize exercises that mimic everyday movements to improve strength, stability, and flexibility. This can prevent injuries and improve overall functionality.
Cardiovascular Health: Aerobic exercises (like walking, swimming, or cycling) are often integral to these programs, promoting heart health and improving circulation.
Strength Training and Mobility: Resistance training, stretching, and mobility work are also key components to promote muscle function, balance, and joint health.
Treatments Available

Manual Therapy
Hands-on techniques used by skilled therapists to manipulate and mobilize the body’s muscles, joints, and soft tissues. This can help alleviate pain, increase range of motion, and improve functional mobility.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Targeted treatments for injuries and conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, including sprains, strains, fractures, and post-surgical recovery.

Sports Rehabilitation
Designed specifically for athletes recovering from injuries or optimizing performance. Includes exercises, manual therapy, and modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation.

Chronic Pain Management
Programs designed for individuals dealing with ongoing pain conditions (e.g., arthritis, fibromyalgia) to reduce discomfort through guided movement, stretching, and strengthening exercises.
Steps to Access ICBC-Funded Care
Step 1: Report Your Accident to ICBC
- Call ICBC: Notify ICBC as soon as possible after the accident. You can report your claim online, by phone, or at an ICBC driver services location.
- Provide Accident Details: Make sure to have information about the accident (date, time, location) and the injuries you’ve sustained.
- Obtain Your Claim Number: Once your claim is processed, you will receive a claim number, which is needed to access funding for treatments.
Step 2: Consult with Your Doctor or Healthcare Provider
- Initial Visit: Visit your family doctor or healthcare professional to assess your injuries. They will help determine the appropriate treatment plan.
- Get a Referral: Your doctor may provide a referral to specific therapies like physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic care, or other treatments that ICBC may cover.
Step 3: Choose an ICBC-Approved Healthcare Provider
- Find an Approved Provider: Select a healthcare provider who is registered with ICBC and offers treatments covered under your insurance plan. These include physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractic care, and more.
- Confirm Coverage: Verify with your provider that they accept ICBC claims and will direct bill ICBC for your treatments.
Step 4: Begin Your Treatment

- ICBC-Funded Coverage: ICBC covers the costs of medically necessary treatments (up to a specified amount) to support your recovery.
Step 5: Follow Up and Track Your Progress
- Ongoing Assessments: Continue with your treatment as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Regular follow-ups may be needed to assess your recovery progress.
- ICBC Reporting: Your provider will submit progress reports to ICBC as necessary to continue treatment authorization and funding.
Step 6: Additional Support
- Extended Treatments: If you require additional treatments beyond the initial funding, your healthcare provider can assist in submitting a request for further ICBC coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What treatments are covered by ICBC?
ICBC provides coverage for a wide range of medically necessary treatments to help you recover after a motor vehicle accident. Treatments that may be covered include:
- Physiotherapy
- Chiropractic care
- Massage therapy
- Kinesiology
- Occupational therapy
- Psychological therapy and counseling
- Acupuncture (in some cases)
ICBC will cover the costs for the initial treatments required for your recovery, usually up to a set amount. Additional treatments may be covered if deemed necessary by your healthcare provider and ICBC.
How does direct billing work?
Direct billing means that your healthcare provider will send the bill directly to ICBC, so you don’t have to pay out-of-pocket for your covered treatments. Here’s how it works:
- Provide Your ICBC Claim Number: When you attend your first appointment, make sure to provide your ICBC claim number.
- Treatment Approval: Your provider will confirm that your treatment is covered under your ICBC claim and will begin the services.
- ICBC Submits Payment: After your treatment, your provider will submit the bill directly to ICBC for payment.
- Out-of-Pocket Costs: In most cases, there should be no up-front costs. If there are any additional fees not covered by ICBC (such as costs for extended treatments), you’ll be informed by your provider.
Direct billing helps simplify the process and ensures you can focus on your recovery.
What if my ICBC claim is pending?
If your ICBC claim is still under review or pending approval, you can still receive treatment. Here’s how:
- Approval for Initial Care: Even if your claim is pending, you may still be eligible for initial care under ICBC’s early recovery benefits. This includes coverage for assessments and treatments like physiotherapy and chiropractic care.
- Temporary Payment: In some cases, you may be asked to pay for treatments up-front, but you can submit your receipts to ICBC for reimbursement once your claim is approved.
Your healthcare provider can help you navigate the process and may be able to work directly with ICBC to ensure your treatments are covered as soon as your claim is approved.

What documents or information do I need to start treatment?
To begin treatment under ICBC coverage, you’ll need to provide the following:
- ICBC Claim Number: This is provided after you’ve reported the accident to ICBC.
- Personal Identification: A valid ID (driver’s license, health card, or passport).
- Medical Referral: If applicable, bring any referral from your family doctor or healthcare provider indicating the treatments required.
- Accident Details: Any relevant details about the accident, such as the date, time, and a brief description of your injuries.

Once you have these documents, we can start your assessment and begin treatment right away.
Standard Program User Fees
Patients with a valid ICBC claim number have access to pre-authorized treatment up to 12 weeks from their date of accident. There are no user fees for physiotherapy as long as you are actively working with an NSSM Kinesiologist for active rehab. Coverage ends when the total number of treatments is reached or you are past the 12 week timeline. Your practitioner can request an extension if they feel you need further treatment (extensions are subject to ICBC approval).
Should patients continue to attend treatment without approval from ICBC when the request is still in process, patients may be responsible for the cost of any treatments received outside of ICBC approval.
