What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. The impact causes a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, resulting in decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, or balance problems, among others.

To further understand what a concussion is, watch this video for an in-depth whiteboard demonstration from Dr. Cameron Marshall (@Concussion_Doc)!

Concussion Treatment

When it comes to concussion treatment, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution—every brain and every injury is different.

A concussion, often called a mild traumatic brain injury, can happen from a bump, jolt, or blow to the head, leaving you with symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and balance issues that can linger longer than you’d expect.

Our team of dedicated healthcare professionals—including physicians, nurse practitioners, and rehabilitation specialists—work together to provide a thorough assessment and personalized management plan for each patient. We focus on education, so you understand what’s happening in your brain and what to expect during recovery. Whether you’re dealing with post concussion symptoms after a sports injury, a fall, or a car accident, our approach is designed to meet your unique needs. From your first assessment to your return to work, school, or play, we’re here to guide you every step of the way, helping you recover fully and safely.

Concussion Rehabilitation

Our team of dedicated healthcare professionals—including physicians, nurse practitioners, and rehabilitation specialists—work together to provide a thorough assessment and personalized management plan for each patient. We focus on education, so you understand what’s happening in your brain and what to expect during recovery. Whether you’re dealing with post concussion symptoms after a sports injury, a fall, or a car accident, our approach is designed to meet your unique needs. From your first assessment to your return to work, school, or play, we’re here to guide you every step of the way, helping you recover fully and safely.

Vestibular Rehabilitation for Dizziness

Feeling like you’re on a merry-go-round? Vestibular rehabilitation targets dizziness and balance issues that linger after a concussion. We use exercises to retrain your brain and inner ear to work together, reducing that woozy feeling. It’s like teaching your brain to dance again—smooth and steady.

Oculomotor Exercises for Vision

Struggling to focus or track moving objects? Oculomotor exercises help your eyes get back in sync after a mild traumatic brain injury. Think of it as a workout for your eye muscles, helping you read, drive, or catch a ball without seeing double. These targeted drills make a big difference for post-concussion symptoms.

Benefits of Rehabilitation

Our comprehensive program combines manual therapy, balance assessment, and targeted education to help you regain your footing—literally and figuratively. For individuals with complex concussion cases, including school-aged youth and those struggling with mood changes, depression, or vision problems, our team tailors each treatment plan to address your specific challenges.

Through outpatient screening and ongoing support, we help you learn to manage your symptoms, improve your balance, and safely return to physical activity. Families and caregivers are included in the process, receiving education and resources to support recovery at home.

With our concussion care program, you can expect to receive individualized attention, expert management, and a clear path to recovery—so you can get back to your daily life, work, or sports within a few weeks.

Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and care you need to recover confidently and completely.

The protocols we follow are evidence based and we are updated monthly on the latest research findings regarding concussion. North Shore Concussion Care is now recognized by Complete Concussion Management Inc.™ (CCMI) and joins a network of clinics around the world offering evidence-based concussion care. From outpatient screening to post-concussion symptom relief, we guide you through recovery with precision. We emphasize a short rest period—24 to 48 hours—followed by a gradual return to physical activity. Manna’s expertise shines here, blending manual therapy with neurocognitive testing to address complex concussion cases. Helping patients and athletes safely Return to Learn, Work and Play.

Gradual Return to Activity

Why rush back and risk a setback? A gradual return to physical activity is key to concussion management. We design sub-symptom threshold exercise programs to ease you back without triggering headaches or dizziness. It’s like easing into a hot bath—one step at a time.

You’re one click away from booking your appointment!

What is the best treatment for a concussion?

The best concussion treatment starts with 24-48 hours of rest to let your brain catch its breath. After that, a gradual return to physical activity under the guidance of a trained professional is key. At North Shore Sports Medicine, we use vestibular rehab, oculomotor exercises, and manual therapy to address symptoms like dizziness and headaches. Exertional testing helps ensure you’re ready for sports or work. Every plan is customized, because your brain deserves VIP care.

“Following a short period of rest, a gradual increase in mental and physical activity is recommended by a licensed healthcare practitioner trained in concussion management.” (Source: International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport)

How long does it take to recover from a concussion?

Most people recover from a concussion within 7-10 days, but complex concussion cases can take weeks or longer. Some individuals, especially adolescents, may experience a slow recovery, requiring additional support and monitoring. School-aged youth may need extra time to ease back into studies or sports. Our team monitors post-concussion symptoms closely, adjusting your plan to avoid setbacks. Patience and proper concussion management are your best friends here.

“Although most concussions resolve within the first few weeks, a subset of patients experience significantly reduced productivity.” (Source: PMC)

Can you exercise after a concussion?

Not so fast! For the first 24-48 hours, stick to minimal physical activity to avoid worsening symptoms. After that, our team designs sub-symptom threshold exercise programs to safely reintroduce movement. Exertional testing ensures you’re ready for more intense activity, like sports. Always check with a physician or concussion specialist before hitting the gym.

“Sub-symptom threshold aerobic exercise should be considered in combination with other treatments for persisting symptoms.” (Source: Concussion Alliance)

What should I avoid after a concussion?

Steer clear of activities that could jolt your head again, like contact sports or amusement park rides. Limit screen time to reduce headaches and eye strain. Avoid pushing through dizziness or fatigue—your brain needs a break. Our concussion care includes education to help you dodge these pitfalls and recover smoothly.
