Running Tips

Smart, simple ways to stay motivated and injury-free this season along with running tips this Fall season.

Fall is one of the best times to run on the North Shore. The heat has backed off, the trails are glowing with color, and there’s something about that crisp air that just makes you want to move, but with cooler temps and shorter days, there are a few things worth keeping in mind, especially if you’re just getting back into running or looking to build consistency this season. Here are some of our best fall running tips from the team at North Shore Sports Medicine, no fluff, no pressure, just things we’d tell a friend who wants to feel good while hitting the pavement (or trails!).

1. Dress for 10 Minutes From Now

When you step outside and feel a chill, it’s tempting to bundle up, but once you start moving, you’ll warm up fast. Dress in light, breathable layers and go for slightly cool at the start. It’ll pay off by kilometer two.

Quick tip: Look for moisture-wicking gear and a light windbreaker and make sure you’re visible, fall runs often happen in low light.

2. Warm Up, Even If You’re in a Hurry

We get it, time is tight. But if you’re heading out into cool weather with cold muscles, your body’s more prone to aches and strains. Give yourself five minutes for a warm-up: think walking lunges, leg swings, or even a brisk walk before your run.

Need a simple routine? Pop by and we’ll help you build one that works.

3. Hydration Doesn’t Take the Season Off

When it’s not hot, it’s easy to forget to drink water, but your body still needs it, especially as the air gets drier. Bring a water bottle to your run or at least hydrate well before and after.

4. Watch Your Step — Leaves Are Sneaky

Fallen leaves can be beautiful, but they can also be slippery and hide rocks or roots underneath. Be extra mindful on trails or damp sidewalks. Slowing down when conditions are sketchy doesn’t mean you’re slacking, it means you’re running smart.

5. Run with Intention

You don’t need to be chasing a race or a personal best to make the most of your runs. Maybe you’re running to clear your head, boost your energy, or just enjoy some quiet time outside. Whatever your reason, let that be your motivation.

Your “why” matters, and it doesn’t have to be about distance or speed.

6. Listen to What Your Body’s Telling You

A little soreness is normal. Sharp, nagging pain? Not so much. Fall is a good time to check in with your body. If something feels off, even slightly, come see us before it becomes a full-blown issue. Whether you’re new to running or have been pounding the pavement for years, we’re here to help you keep moving comfortably.

7. Track your progress

Track your runs with a Smart watch, or other device to help with recording your progress!

Final Thought: It’s Not About Running Perfectly. It’s About Showing Up.

Some days you’ll feel strong, some days you won’t. That’s part of the process. We’re here to support you every step of the way, whether that’s through recovery, injury prevention, or simply getting you back to what you love doing most.
