If it’s been a while since you last worked out or did your favourite physical activity, you’re definitely not the only one. Getting back into movement after a long break can feel a bit daunting.
Life happens. Maybe you were recovering from an injury or work got busy. Or maybe your energy just… wasn’t there. Whatever the reason is, we want you to know: it’s okay to start again, but don’t forget to ease on back.
Here’s some recommendations for easing back into movement:
1. Start Movement With This Version of You
It’s natural to compare yourself to who you were in the past. Maybe back to a time when you were working out more, had more energy, or just felt stronger. But it’s important to remember that your body is here with you now, and that’s where your starting point is. And that’s okay. We all have to start somewhere and even a 10-minute walk around the block counts.
2. Consistency is More Important Than Intensity
You don’t have to crush your first workout back. In fact, please don’t. The goal isn’t to exhaust yourself—it’s to create something you’ll actually want to come back to. A couple of short, gentle sessions a week? That’s a solid win.
3. Sore Is Fine. Pain? Not So Much.
It’s completely normal and should be expected to feel a little sore when you start moving again after a break. However, it’s crucial to pay attention to your body. Are you feeling sharp pain, pulling, or anything that sticks around too long? That’s your body waving a little flag that it might need some help. Don’t forget that rest is part of the process too.
4. Let’s Start with the Basics
Don’t forget to drink some water, take a few deep breaths, and stretch a little. These are the things that can make a big difference when you’re getting back into a groove. It sounds simple (because it is), but your body will thank you.
5. Progress Isn’t Always Obvious
If you feel like you’re not seeing the results you were expecting, you may need to redefine what “progress” means to you. Sure, you might not be hitting new personal bests right away, but maybe you’re sleeping better or your mood is better. Perhaps your back doesn’t ache as much after a long day at work. That is progress and it definitely counts.
6. Ask For Help; You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone
Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start. Especially if you’re feeling nervous about doing too much too soon, that’s what we’re here for. Whether it’s a physio or kinesiology session, or just a chat with someone who gets it, we will give you the support to make it feel easier and less overwhelming.
The Bottom Line: It’s a Positive Thing to Start Again
You don’t need to put pressure on yourself or feel guilty for taking a break. Just start where you are, be kind to yourself, and take it one step at a time. Movement is meant to feel good and getting yourself back out there is only a positive thing. We’re here for you when you’re ready. Whether it’s physiotherapy, Pilates, or creating a plan that feels right for you, we’ll help you ease back in to it.
