Vertigo, BVVP, Dizziness Relief
Elevate your sense of well-being through vestibular physiotherapy in North Vancouver, designed to address vertigo and related vestibular disorders.
Our team at North Shore Sports Medicine leans on years of expertise to deliver vestibular rehabilitation that focuses on retraining the vestibular system for improved balance and reduced dizziness. Many people experience issues when the inner ear malfunctions, causing a whirlwind of spinning sensations that can disrupt daily life.
At times, vestibular physiotherapy can feel like learning a new dance, where each step brings you closer to regaining a normal life. Gentle exercises target the body’s sense of head position and body position, resetting the harmony within the inner ear.

What is Vertigo and the Vestibular System?
Vertigo is more than just a fleeting sense of dizziness; it’s a disorienting sensation where you or your surroundings seem to spin uncontrollably. This can range from mild episodes that are merely annoying to severe bouts that disrupt your daily activities and make it difficult to even stand up.
At the heart of this issue lies the vestibular system, a complex network located in the inner ear. This system is crucial for maintaining balance and spatial orientation, providing your brain with essential information about your body position in response to both external movements and self-induced actions.

What are the symptoms of vertigo?
People often describe vertigo as a spinning or swaying feeling that appears out of nowhere, sometimes lasting for several minutes. Common symptoms can include:
- heavy-headedness
- blurred vision
- a sensation that the world is tilting sideways.
- lack of focus
- noticeable imbalance
- occasional nausea
Episodes vary depending on the individual and may be aggravated by sudden head movement or quick shifts in body position. Some experience mild dizziness when getting out of bed, while others have more severe episodes accompanied by vomiting. Ear discomfort or ringing might appear if there’s involvement of other vestibular disorders like Meniere’s disease. A quick chat with a qualified physiotherapist can clarify the root cause and guide you to the proper treatment that fosters a return to a normal life.

Who will benefit from Vestibular Rehabilitation?
Anyone experiencing dizziness, vertigo, or common symptoms like sudden imbalance may find relief with a tailored vestibular rehabilitation program. Those diagnosed with vestibular neuritis, Meniere’s disease, or other vestibular disorders often gain fresh hope when therapy targets the root cause. Individuals plagued by frequent falls, motion intolerance, or difficulty stabilizing their gaze during head movement are likely candidates. The aim is to help people return to a fulfilling life through a focused plan that re-educates the brain.
What causes Vertigo?
Some cases stem from vestibular neuritis, an inflammation of the vestibular nerve often linked to ear infections. Others arise from migraines, allergies, or even head injuries that disrupt the vestibular system.
What causes BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)?
BPPV is a common issue that arises when tiny crystals in the inner ear drift into the semicircular canals, causing unexpected episodes of vertigo with certain head positions. Even shifting in bed can set off a wave of spinning that makes everyday tasks daunting. The spells typically last under a minute, but they can leave you feeling unsettled for much longer. Though BPPV can strike at any age, older adults face a higher risk due to natural wear and tear on the ear structures.
What is Happening In The Inner Ear
The vestibular system relies on sensors in the inner ear called the semicircular canals, which measure head rotations. These canals, along with the otolith organs, signal the brain about changes in head position and body position. When tiny particles shift or become dislodged, they send mixed messages that lead to dizziness, imbalance, or a sense of spinning. Think of it as a malfunction in your body’s internal GPS, causing confusion whenever you try to move around.
People Also Ask Us
Many individuals seek clarity on vestibular physiotherapy and its effects. Here are some of the top questions we hear from around the web:
How long does vestibular therapy take to work?
It can depend on the severity of your vestibular dysfunction, but many patients see progress within a few weeks of consistent sessions.
Is vertigo the only symptom of vestibular disorders?
Not at all. Symptoms can range from dizziness and nausea to imbalance and difficulties focusing.
Can a physiotherapist help with ear-related balance issues?
Yes. A well-trained physiotherapist performs a comprehensive assessment of the inner ear and vestibular system to develop a proper treatment strategy.
Do you offer direct billing for vestibular physiotherapy?
Absolutely. We offer direct billing to lessen the burden on our patients and make the path to a normal life easier. Additionally, we accept extended health plans to provide more options for coverage.
