The Importance of Fall Prevention Training

fall prevention for seniors

Did you know that falls are a leading cause of injury and further disease development in seniors? Here at North Shore Sports Medicine, we emphasize the importance of balance practice techniques and strength training to enhance your stability and reduce your risk of falls. Let’s dive into how fall prevention classes can help you!

Why Practice Balance?

Balance practice involves exercises that improve your ability to stay upright and steady. Activities like standing on one leg, eye tracking practice, and vestibular system challenges can significantly enhance your balance and can help strengthen the muscles your body uses to improve coordination and increase proprioception – your body’s sense of its position in space.

How does Strength Training play into Balance?

Strength training is equally important as balance practice when it comes to fall prevention. Strong, trained muscles will support your joints and bones, making it easier to perform activities of daily living with confidence. Exercises like squats, resistance band workouts, and workouts targeting your legs, hips, and core, all go hand-in-hand with balance practice techniques to provide you with a solid foundation to stand (and not fall) on.
