Let’s be honest, there’s nothing quite like the first truly warm weekend of summer.
You step outside, and the sun actually feels warm. Suddenly, the North Shore comes alive. Everyone’s hiking, biking, running, gardening, playing soccer, chasing their kids, or just soaking up every second of that long-awaited sunshine.
We get it. We feel that same pull to make the most of it.
But here’s what we also see at the clinic: that first big summer weekend often comes with a few… consequences. People go from 0 to 100 because the weather changed, not because their bodies were ready. By Monday, we’re seeing a wave of sore backs, stiff knees, pulled calves, and people Googling things like “why does my hip hurt after hiking?” or “can I injure myself weeding the garden?”
The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way.
If you’re heading back outside this season, a little prep can go a long way. Here’s how to ease in safely and set yourself up for a strong, injury-free summer.
Start by meeting your body where it’s at.
It’s easy to assume you can pick up right where you left off last fall. Maybe you were running 10Ks or hitting the gym regularly before winter hit. But if things slowed down over the colder months, your body’s likely not operating at that same level, and that’s okay.
Start lighter. Go shorter. Give your muscles and joints a chance to remember what they’re doing. It’s not about going slow, it’s about going smart.
Don’t skip the warm-up.
We know. You’re excited. The sun is out. You want to do the thing, not prep for it.
But just five to ten minutes of movement, like arm swings, shoulder rolls, walking lunges, or a light jog, can wake up your body and get everything working smoothly.
A good warm-up isn’t about breaking a sweat. It’s about saying, “Hey body, we’re moving again. Let’s do this right.”
And if something feels off? Pay attention.
That tightness in your hip, a twinge in your heel, or a weird pull in your shoulder, those little signals matter. They’re your body’s way of flagging something before it becomes a bigger problem.
Pushing through might feel tough in the moment, but it often just leads to setbacks. Listen early, and you’ll stay active longer.
What We Believe: Prevent First, Treat Less
At NSSM, we’re all about prevention. Sure, we treat injuries, but we’d rather help you avoid them altogether.
A session with a physio, chiro, or kin can give you a better picture of how your body’s moving, where imbalances might be hiding, and how to build strength in the right places.
And no, you don’t need to be injured to benefit. In fact, that’s kind of the point.
