What Is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?

Pregnancy, childbirth, high-impact sport, abdominal and pelvic surgery, and everyday life can all affect bladder, bowel and sexual function. Your pelvic floor muscles play an important role in supporting these functions, as well as supporting your pelvic organs and core.

Pelvic health concerns are common and can have a significant impact on your comfort, confidence and quality of life. Everyone’s pelvic health concerns are different. Megan, our pelvic health
physiotherapist, will take the time to understand your individual concerns and contributing factors before developing an evidence-based, personalized treatment plan. Treatment may include
education, exercises, movement, hands-on treatment and practical strategies to help you reach your
goals.

How Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Can Help

Megan provides assessment and treatment for:

• Pre and post natal care
• Bladder and bowel incontinence
• Prolapse management, including pessary fitting
• Men’s Health (i.e. pre & post-prostatectomy)
• Pre & Post operative care (i.e. hysterectomy, abdominal surgery)
• Pelvic pain, including pain with intercourse
• Mastitis and blocked ducts

Pelvic health concerns are not exclusive to women or pregnancy. Megan provides pelvic health
physiotherapy for people of all genders and identities.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment with Megan is a private 60-minute session. You’ll have time to talk through your concerns, symptoms, relevant health history and goals. Megan will then discuss the assessment options with you and recommend an approach based on your individual needs.
If appropriate, your physical assessment may include an internal vaginal or rectal assessment to assess the pelvic floor muscles and how they may be contributing to your symptoms.

This information can help guide your treatment and ensure your rehabilitation program is tailored to you.
An internal assessment is never required. You are in control of what happens during your appointment, and your consent will always be requested before any internal assessment. This will
be discussed with each patient individually during the assessment. Where appropriate, Megan can use alternative assessment options, such as real-time ultrasound.

Please arrive to your appointment with a comfortably full bladder. We encourage drinking 1-2 glasses of water within 2 hours prior to your appointment.
Appointments take place in a private treatment room. Towels and draping are provided to help you feel comfortable and maintain your privacy throughout the assessment and treatment.
