Do you experience dull aches, loss of grip strength or numbness? What about restricted mobility in a particular joint, sharp pains, tingling or weakness? If so, you may be suffering from repetitive strain injury (RSI).
RSI is one of today’s most common occupational hazards, affecting 2.3 million Canadians every year. It may affect anyone involved in work that requires frequent repetitive motion of one body part, such as a hand, arm or leg. It is most likely to occur when you use excessive force while doing something repetitively or if you perform a repetitive task in an awkward posture.
Prevention is the Best Medicine
It is much easier to prevent RSI than to cure it. Our physiotherapists recommend the following to avoid RSI:
- Maintain correct posture
- Warm up before undertaking strenuous activities or lifting or moving heavy objects
- Take frequent breaks
- Alternate between sitting and standing, if at all possible
Our physiotherapists can advise you on modifications to your work station based on the science of ergonomics to help you avoid RSI or banish symptoms if they have already appeared. Ergonomics is an applied science focused on the design and arrangement of work tools and equipment to ensure products and environments are comfortable, safe and efficient for people to use.
Early Diagnosis is Key
Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to ensure recovery from the symptoms of RSI. While most cases of RSI are treatable, it can recur and may become chronic without appropriate management. Our physiotherapists can perform full assessments, provide information and an effective treatment plan to relieve RSI symptoms.
